Program Questions

The basics, answered

Answered using current CCA policy.

What happens during the visit?

A CCA-registered practitioner reviews your health history over live video and decides, using their own clinical judgment, whether your condition may benefit from cannabis. See the CCA's Patients & Caregivers page.

Is there a fixed conditions list?

No, not since January 2024. Under Code of Virginia § 54.1-3408.3, any CCA-registered practitioner can certify a condition they believe cannabis may help with.

Does the visit have to be video?

Yes. Virginia law requires real-time interactive audiovisual telemedicine — a phone call alone doesn't meet that bar.

Is state registration required to purchase?

No. The CCA's patient card is optional and separate. Your written certification plus a valid ID is enough at a dispensary.

What's the typical cost?

Consultation pricing is set by the practitioner platform and shown before booking, separate from the CCA's optional $50 fee.

What if my certification is about to expire?

Book another telehealth evaluation before your current certification expires. A renewal is valid for another year.

What kind of provider issues the certification?

Physicians (MD/DO), physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, licensed in Virginia and registered with the CCA.

Can I use a card issued in another state?

No. Only certifications issued by CCA-registered Virginia practitioners are valid at Virginia dispensaries.

Conditions Patients Ask About

What cannabis is commonly discussed for

General information only — whether any of this applies to you is a conversation for your practitioner, not something to self-diagnose from a webpage.

Chronic pain is one of the most common reasons patients pursue certification nationwide. Since Virginia doesn't require a specific diagnosis from a fixed list, your practitioner will consider your individual pain history and determine, using their own clinical judgment, whether certification may be appropriate.
Anxiety is a condition patients frequently raise during certification visits. Whether it's an appropriate fit depends on your individual history and your practitioner's own clinical assessment — there's no anxiety-specific requirement or checklist involved.
Sleep difficulty is a common topic in these evaluations. Your practitioner will talk through your specific situation and use their own judgment to decide whether certification makes sense for you.
Muscle spasms and spasticity are conditions some patients bring up during their evaluation. As with any condition, Virginia leaves that determination to your practitioner's clinical judgment rather than a preset list.
Nausea, including nausea related to other medical treatments, is a widely discussed reason for seeking certification. Your practitioner will evaluate your specific circumstances to determine whether it's appropriate for you.
Joint pain and arthritis-related discomfort are common topics in these visits. Whether certification is appropriate depends on your practitioner's assessment of your specific situation, not a diagnosis checklist.
Local Detail

Detail worth knowing

A Cluster of Connected Neighborhoods

Red Mill isn't one single subdivision — it's a group of connected communities, including Red Mill Farm, Red Mill Landing, and Red Mill Village, that share the same schools, shopping, and general identity, centered roughly around Princess Anne Road and Upton Drive.

Close to Two Military Installations

Red Mill sits a short drive from both Dam Neck Annex and NAS Oceana. Virginia's certification eligibility doesn't depend on military affiliation, but cannabis remains federally restricted, and service members should check directly with their command about rules separate from state law before assuming state legality settles the question.

A Shopping Hub, Not Just a Neighborhood

Red Mill Commons, at Nimmo Parkway and Upton Drive, is one of the larger shopping centers in southeastern Virginia Beach. Weekend traffic through the area picks up accordingly — a weekday visit tends to be the easier drive.

Ten Minutes From Sandbridge

Sandbridge Beach sits about ten minutes south of Red Mill — a quieter alternative to the main Oceanfront strip. Locals often describe Red Mill as a practical home base within easy reach of the beach without oceanfront prices or crowds.

Open to Every Virginia Resident

This site is centered on Red Mill, but Virginia's certification process is identical for any resident of the state, wherever you happen to live.

Practitioner Judgment, Not a Government List

Since January 2024, Virginia hasn't maintained a fixed list of qualifying conditions. Under Code of Virginia § 54.1-3408.3, a CCA-registered practitioner certifies patients using their own clinical judgment during a live video visit, evaluating each patient's individual circumstances rather than checking a diagnosis against a government checklist.

From Certification to Dispensary

Book a video visit with a CCA-registered practitioner. If approved, a written certification is issued immediately, valid for up to a year. That certification and a government-issued ID are enough to purchase at any licensed Virginia dispensary the same day. Full detail at the CCA's Patients & Caregivers page.
